String Theory Series

I love the tension created between the visual sense of order and the chaos that swims beneath the surface of everyday life. This dynamic relationship speaks to the the fragility of both the internal and external structures we build and rely on, and the ease with which they can be disrupted and even erased.

In these paintings I have expressed these ideas using raffia embedded in under layers of paint covered over by hard-edged rectangles that span the width of the painting. These shapes are then disrupted by organic lines created when the string is pulled up through all of the layers of paint.
